What are Hazardous Substances?
Hazardous substances are chemicals or materials that pose a risk to health, property, or the environment. In New Zealand, these substances can include industrial chemicals, pesticides, solvents, fuels, and even some household cleaning products. Their classification as “hazardous” is based on properties like toxicity, flammability, reactivity, and environmental impact.
Why Do We Monitor Hazardous Substances?
Monitoring hazardous substances is essential to protect people and ecosystems from their potential risks. Effective monitoring helps prevent accidents, contamination, and health risks such as respiratory problems, poisoning, or chronic illnesses that can arise from exposure. Monitoring also provides critical data for compliance, identifying areas where additional controls or changes in usage are needed to maintain safe environments.
Importance of Monitoring Hazardous Substances
Continuous monitoring supports a safer workplace and environment. It minimises risks by ensuring that hazardous substances are stored, used, and disposed of properly. This proactive approach not only safeguards health and safety but also ensures that businesses maintain a reputation for best practices in environmental stewardship.
Businesses working with any hazardous substances that pose specific health risks (like carcinogens) may need to conduct regular health monitoring for workers.
Legal Obligations in New Zealand
In New Zealand, the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) and its related regulations require businesses to manage the risks associated with hazardous substances. This includes proper labeling, storage, handling, and disposal of these substances. Businesses must also provide adequate training and information to employees who work with hazardous substances. Compliance with these regulations is essential, as failure to meet safety requirements can lead to fines, legal consequences, and increased risks to health and safety.
Businesses must notify the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) if they import, manufacture, possess, or use certain hazardous substances that exceed specified quantities. This inventory notification helps the EPA track high-risk substances across the country and ensures that facilities have appropriate controls in place.
Hazardous Substance Inventories/Register
We provide assistance with developing and maintaining hazardous substance inventories, sourcing valid safety data sheets, and providing guidance on controls in place to reduce hazards in relation to hazardous substances in the workplace.
